Rising Again: How to Get Up When Life Keeps Knocking You Down

Last year, during a period of deep reflection, I found myself thinking about one recurring theme in my life: I have continuously gotten up after being beaten down, time and time again.

I’ve been beaten down by family who should have protected me. By so-called friends who turned their backs when I was no longer useful. By the church, where I once sought refuge but instead found judgment. By relationships where I gave my all, only to be discarded. And in my career, where my value seemed conditional—appreciated until it wasn’t.

At one point, I felt like I had a target on my back. No matter what I did, it seemed like the moment I was no longer beneficial to someone, I was cast aside. The sting of writing these words reminds me just how much I’ve endured. But more than that, it reminds me of how much I have overcome.

How Do You Rise When Life Beats You Down?

One step at a time. One foot in front of the other. Even when it feels like the weight of it all might crush you.

There was a time when I would have laid down and given up, believing the lies that I wasn’t enough or that I didn’t deserve better. But now? Now, I’ve learned to navigate the blows. I’ve learned that resilience isn’t just about surviving—it’s about learning from what tried to break you and using it to build something stronger.

In January of 2023, myself and several other coaches published a book to help readers navigate adversity. The personal knowledge I poured into that book came at a cost—one I wouldn’t wish on anyone. But if sharing my story helps even one person rise after being beaten down, then the pain wasn’t in vain.

If you’re in that place right now—where it feels like life has stripped you of everything—please know that you can get up again. You will get up again. The people who failed you do not define you. The situations that tried to break you do not have the final say.

Your story is still being written. And every time you rise, you are proving that you are stronger than what tried to defeat you.

Have you ever felt like life just kept knocking you down? How did you rise again? Let’s talk about it—because our stories have the power to remind others that they’re not alone.
